Tips for Keeping Your Kitchen Clean

The kitchen is probably the most used room in your home, so whether you cook every night or cook in bulk on the weekends, it's normal for your kitchen to get messy. The reality is that your kitchen demands your attention every day, and neglecting to clean or forgetting to clean surfaces can lead to bigger jobs on the weekends. Here are some ways you can keep your kitchen clean and safe for your entire family.

Clean while you wait

If you find yourself waiting in the kitchen - use your time wisely. If you're waiting for the kettle to boil, then why not put the plates away or unload the dishwasher so you can wipe down the stove or clean the kitchen counters; you'd be surprised what you can achieve in the time it takes for the kettle to boil or the chicken to defrost. Those few minutes of cleaning will all help keep your kitchen clean and tidy for longer.

Clean the sink after washing up

This may seem obvious, but it's totally worth it. Once you're done washing up, be sure to dump the dishwater out of the sink. Bowls full of dirty, greasy water will leave a lingering smell in your kitchen. We're all guilty of leaving little bits of food sediment in the sink plug hole, but it only takes a few seconds to pick them up and put them in the trash (wear rubber gloves if you feel intimidated!) . Finally, sanitize the sink with kitchen cleaner and a clean cloth. You won't regret it when you wake up in the morning to a clean and fresh kitchen.

Clean up spills as soon as possible

Again, this may seem like an obvious tip for keeping your kitchen clean, but life is rarely that simple, and when you're rushing out the door, you may miss spills. The truth is, if you clean up a kitchen spill as soon as it happens, it will be much easier to clean up a day later when it becomes dry and gelatinous.

Clean up as you go

In our experience, cooking usually turns into an organized mess with every pan you own on the counter and the sink full of pots and pans - where did all those food splatters come from? But you can always find time to clean up as you cook to keep your kitchen clean. Before you start cooking, prepare a bowl of warm, soapy water and while the food is cooking, put away any dishes you don't need and wipe down the surfaces. Storage baskets are handy for storing vegetables and fruits in the kitchen.
